Pacific Islander Exhibit Opening December 6, 2018 | Wing Luke Museum's 'Shining Through'

12/19/2018

Hina, goddess of the moon, and which translates to leaning down, represents all that is female, the mother of all living, the light birthed from the female night.
Here, we retell our stories to share the truth and to inform better our selves and our future generations.
Shining Through: Reflections of an Oceanic Future at the Wing Luke Museum features five Pacific Islander artists re-imagining the future of our communities by looking simultaneously at the past to better inform the lens through which we see our futures. Brought back from the prior exhibit, Visions of Pasifika artists Kaleiokalani of Huraiti Mana, Roquin-Jon Quichocho Siongco, Selena Velasco, and Lilian Ongelungel joined together with Solomon Enos to launch this futuristic gallery depicting a matriarchic love and bond, nā wāhine kapu, and the constellations of our native peoples, guiding us across oceans and times. The movement of stars and the moon have been mathematically mapped, scientifically calculated, and religiously followed for thousands of  years by many different peoples across the globe, including and most especially our indigenous peoples of the Pacific.
