TE 'ORI ORA SEATTLE
ABOUT
Te ‘Ori Ora Seattle is the first event of its kind to take place in the Pacific Northwest: a Tahitian dance competition and workshop series that celebrates the ancestral dance practice from the center of Polynesia. Hosted by local pupu ‘ori (dance group) Huraiti Mana and in partnership with Te ‘Ori Ora based out of Guadalajara, Mexico, we invite all pupu ‘ori across Washington, the Pacific Northwest, United States and International groups to join us for our inaugural event. We aim to contribute to the artistic landscape of the ‘Ori Tahiti community in Seattle and find connection in our shared responsibility toward and perpetuation of Tahitian culture. |
Saturday, August 26 will be a day of workshops where our judges Tiana Liufau, Matatini Mou, and Manouche Lehartel share knowledge of traditional and modern practices prior to the competition, including a panel discussion with judges exclusively for ra’atira. The following day, Sunday, August 27 will be a day of competition featuring an exhibition category for toddlers 2-4 years old, various solo categories ages 5+, and small group categories ages 14+ featuring a minimum 5 and maximum 10 dancers. Joining us is renowned drummer Kristopher Lee leading our House Orchestra! The grand prizes of the competition includes three free flights to Tahiti via French Bee Airlines and qualified entrance to compete in the ‘Ori Tahiti World Championship.
With the blessings of Ra'atira (leader) Terevareva, 100% of donations collected through Te 'Ori Ora Seattle 2023 will be given directly to her Māui-based Pupu 'Ori Te Ohi Nui, to distribute in support of their vahine and families impacted by the Lāhainā fires. Tereva honors her vahine, providing them a safe space to gather, to grieve, to heal, and to express. Her doors remain open in Māui. Huraiti Mana dedicates this space at Te 'Ori Ora Seattle to honor the shared bond, power and community that is 'ori. We are honored and humbled to welcome our Māui sisters and all those who will be joining us this weekend Aug 26-27.
With respect, your fellow sisters, mothers, and fēti'i.
