Please join us for our performance at the Seattle Children's Museum to celebrate our communities in the Puget Sound area.
API Chaya is an amazing organization that provides support to people who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, forced marriage and human trafficking. They are dedicated to supporting survivors and strengthening communities. Huraiti Mana was honored to participate in their Donor Appreciation Night, held on November 1 at the Elliot Bay Clubhouse, an event created to celebrate the successes and strengths of API Chaya's programs and achievements.
API Chaya staff, volunteer, friends and family express love and hope, opportunity for healing, support for growth, and kindness for a better world for us all. Mahalo nui loa e API Chaya no ko kokua a ko aloha. Nani kou lei!
Huraiti Mana hosted it's first-ever 2.5-hour lei intensive workshop in partnership with the Wing Luke Museum! In honor of Visions of Pasifika which exhibited from December 2017 - November 2018, Kalei'okalani of Huraiti Mana hosted a workshop focusing on the history and significance of lei-making through the Native Hawaiian wili or wrap style. Mahalo nui loa to all the 'ohana and hoaaloha, family and friends who help spread the word to make this first-ever offering a sold out success! Special mahalo to International Examiner, Arden Fujiwara, Sunshine of Polynesia, Tamali'i Polynesian Dance, Colors of Hawai'i, and more. The room was full of community members spanning across Washington including haumāna from Hālau across Seattle, leaders from the annual Seattle Live Aloha Festival, mamas from Huraiti Mana, staffers from Wing Luke Museum and Arts Corps, and much more 'ohana! We talked story about the type of lei you give and receive, the meanings of using various flowers both in Hawai'i and in the PNW, and methods of creating lei. Almost all were first-ever lei-weavers, and all were very open, dedicated, and didn't want to leave their work. Each left with smiles, laughs, and stories. Huraiti Mana is so grateful for the opportunity to contribute to and heavily involve the ori and hula 'ohana community of the Pacific Northwest. We look forward to hosting future workshops to further our connection to our past and the future of this growing community. Northwest Folklife is kindly inviting Huraiti Mana back again to participate in the Our Big Neighborhood summer series to bring hula to the Seattle Center! As an event sponsor, Families of Color Seattle presents Hula Dancing with Huraiti Mana for the 5th Annual Seattle Children's Festival on Saturday, September 22, 2018. Join us for a fun workshop full of Hawaiian story, history, song, and dance! Learn how we can all share in a deep connection with the land and with each other through the values of 'ohana (family), ha'aheo (pride), and aloha (love).
Huraiti Mana will be doing back-to-back performances in mid-August, rounding out the summer with BAAMFest 2018.
Join us for our second year with the Duwamish River Festival!
Mauruuru to all the Huraiti who hung out at our first annual potluck! 'Ono grinds and great company on one of the hottest (if not THE hottest) day of the year in Seattle. A cool 90 degrees. The Huraiti tamari'i (children) spent time beneath sprinklers and an in inflatable pool (complete with mini water slide - mahalo sister) while the rest of Huraiti relaxed in the shade with colorless otter pops and crazy pistachio whipped cream chocolate pie (mahalo, Marisol!). We ate pancit, lumpia, crab sushi, kimchi friend rice, Swedish meatballs, Japanese cole slaw, fried saimin, adobo, potato rolls, fruit salad, chocolate cake, raspberry cheesecake, shoyu chicken, pizza, and so. much. MORE.
Mahalo and mauruuru e nā huraiti! We celebrate our accomplishments together as an 'ohana in the spirit of aloha. This past year and a half has been full of memories, hard work, laughter, passion, and family. I cannot thank you all enough for the kindness and open-heartedness you share with each other as hula siblings and Ori 'ohana. We are Huraiti Mana. We look forward to continue making waves and growing our community, together. Haere mua! #huraitimana Arts Corps is an amazing and innovative non-profit that revolutionizes arts education by igniting the creative power of young people through culturally engaging learning experiences. Alongside my role as ha'api'i (or ra'atira) at Huraiti Mana, I am also a Master Teaching Artist with Arts Corps. Each year, I teach after-school hula in my class titled "Hula Mai 'Oe" in Burien's Hazel Valley Elementary. Now, Arts Corps is holding it's first-ever Art & Sol community event and fundraiser.
We invite you to join us at this all-ages, family-friendly party, showcasing the creativity of the Arts Corps family of staff, teaching artists, young people, and board members. I will be performing Ori Tahiti dance!
Purchase your tickets today and support this amazing organization and all of its talented and passionate teaching artists. Mahalo nui! Huraiti Mana will be hosting multiple workshops and performing Ori Tahiti as a part of Rock the Lot - Island Edition.
